School girls shine at soccer tournament

“Considering the talent these young girls exhibit, I hope they grow with it, and one day some of them get selected to play for the national team too.”

Kwa-Thema – Fred Habedi Primary School’s U11 girls soccer team scooped medals during the Gauteng East District Soccer Tournament.

The team recently represented the Kwa-Thema cluster at the tournament held at Dellville Football Fields in Germiston.

This was after they won their local matches and became log leaders in the Kwa-Thema cluster. The team finished in second place and were awarded silver medals.

The team’s coach, Katlego Matseme, indicated that the South African women’s football team Banyan Banyana inspires the little girls.

“The Women’s African Confederation Cup win by our national women’s soccer team, Banyana Banyana, served as a major motivator for these young girls to play soccer.

“Considering the talent these young girls exhibit, I hope they grow with it, and one day some of them get selected to play for the national team too,” said Katlego.

He said he coaches the girls alongside one of the assistant teachers, Sihle Mtsweni, and they are hoping for the best in the other leagues.
