Kwa-Thema – Thokozani Mkhatshwa (29) is set to represent South Africa at an international Scouting event that will bring together participants from 43 countries.

He will be representing both South Africa and the South African Scout movement as part of the international delegation.

The event is called 2nd Africa Rover Moot which will be happening from August 1 to of August 8, at Arrowe Park Scouts Grounds in Benoni.

His journey towards representing SA internationally began through his involvement in Scouting at a young age.

“Over the years, I took on various leadership roles, participated in community projects, and dedicated myself to youth development.

“These experiences helped prepare me for this opportunity. Growing up in Kwa-Thema taught me the values of resilience, community, and hard work,” he explained.

“The township environment exposed me to both challenges and opportunities, and it inspired me to become involved in youth development and community service.

“It shaped me into someone who believes in giving back and creating opportunities for others.”

His inspiration towards perusing an international opportunity was the will to learn from others especially those from different countries.

He says he also wanted to share South African experiences, and contribute to positive change through leadership and service.

“Also, another contributing factor is that I was one of the people who were sent to attend the 1st Africa Rover Moot in Kenya 2023.

“I felt honoured, excited, and deeply humbled. It was a proud moment not only for me but also for my family, community, and everyone who has supported me throughout my journey,” he added.

Mkhatshwa explained that the opportunity to represent SA on a global stage aims to bring together young leaders from different countries to promote cultural exchange, leadership development, collaboration, and global citizenship.

His role at the 2nd Africa Rover Moot will be to actively participate in discussions, learning activities, and cultural exchanges while representing South Africa and sharing our experiences with participants from around the world.

Mkhatshwa is currently preparing for the opportunity by learning more about the participating countries, engaging with fellow delegates, strengthening his leadership skills, and ensuring he can effectively represent both his country and community.

“Representing SA and Kwa-Thema on global stage feels like a tremendous privilege and responsibility. I carry the stories, values, and aspirations of my community with me.

“It is an opportunity to showcase the talent, resilience, and potential that exists in Kwa-Thema and throughout South Africa,” he mentioned.

Some of the challenges he has faced on his journey are financial constraints, limited opportunities, and various personal challenges.

Like many young people, Mkhatshwa has overcome his challenges through perseverance, support from mentors, and a commitment to continuous learning and growth.

“My family, mentors, Scout leaders, and community members have all played significant roles. Their encouragement and belief in me have helped me pursue opportunities that once seemed out of reach.

“Youth development has taught me leadership, empathy, responsibility, and the importance of service. Working with young people has helped me grow both personally and professionally,” Mkhatshwa said.

“I want to share that young people have the power to create positive change regardless of their background. Our differences make us stronger, and by working together we can build a better future.

“I hope it shows them that global opportunities are possible regardless of where you come from. With determination, hard work, and a willingness to learn, young people can achieve remarkable things.”

Mkhatshwa hopes to leave a legacy of leadership, service, and empowerment by helping young people discover their potential and create opportunities for themselves and others.

“My journey is proof that dreams are achievable when combined with hard work, dedication, and support from a caring community.

“I am proud to represent Kwa-Thema and South Africa, and I hope my story encourages others to pursue their own aspirations without fear,” he concluded.
