Gift dreams of becoming a well-known cartoonist

Springs - Drawing is not just a talent to Gift Maluleke (24), but is a means to make ends meet.

The talented artist is originally from Limpopo and now lives in Springs.

Maluleke says his love for drawing started when he was 11 years old.

Despite not receiving any formal training in art, he draws cartoons, house plans and people showing different emotions.

He explains that after realising his talent, he knew drawing is what he wanted to do to put food on the table and also help young up-and-coming artists fulfil their dreams.

“The one thing that kept me drawing was the encouragement I received from my primary school teachers and family,” says Maluleke.

He says being a young artist from a rural area comes with many challenges.

Maluleke says he sometimes thought his drawing dream would come to an end after struggling to get sufficient cash to buy supplies and equipment needed for drawing.

“Having no financial assistance is a major challenge I have encountered many times,” says Maluleke.

He says he did not lose hope, however, but ensured his work is seen by the community in order for him to continue doing what he loves.

Maluleke’s dream is to train more than 100 young artists and to have their work exhibited around the country.

He says while his art has not been seen by many, he still believes his dream of becoming one of the most popular cartoonists in the country will one day come true.

Maluleke encourages young artists to believe in their art and to not allow challenges to stop them from reaching their goals.
