Man arrested after police chase

The man faces charges of attempted murder and reckless and negligent driving.

A 53-year-old man, alleged to be an illegal mining boss, was arrested after a police chase while on his way to the Everest informal settlement on Thursday.

During the arrest, an angry mob turned on the police demanding that they set the man free.

They threw stones at the SAPS.

Springs police spokesperson Sergeant Themba Tshabalala said police identified a red Mazda 3 with two suspicious-looking occupants.

They tried to stop it but the pair drove off and police gave chase.

“The suspects attempted to drive off several times and they drove into the Everest informal settlement,” he explained.

They opened fire at the police who retaliated by shooting at the wheels of the car, which became stuck on the muddy gravel road.

The pair attempted to evade arrest by jumping out of the car, armed and carrying a black bag full of money.

Tshabalala added that the man was nabbed on the scene and his accomplice managed to evade arrest and was still on the run.

He is facing charges of attempted murder and reckless and negligent driving and will appear before the Springs Magistrate’s Court soon.
