Ekurhuleni Water and Sanitation Department earns prestigious certification

The recognition is expected to reinforce public trust by ensuring greater consistency and reliability in water and sanitation services across the metro.

The City of Ekurhuleni celebrated a major achievement after its Water and Sanitation Department secured ISO 9001:2015 certification from the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS), placing the metro among only two metropolitan municipalities in South Africa to attain this prestigious recognition.

The milestone was commemorated during a special event held at the Alberton Civic Centre on May 7.

The ceremony honoured frontline workers and departmental teams whose dedication and commitment contributed to the successful certification process.

The event was officiated by MMC for Metro Trading Utilities, Jean Sthato, alongside MMC for Metro Operations and Maintenance, Nomadlozi Nkosi.

The ISO 9001:2015 certification confirms that the city’s Water and Sanitation Department meets internationally recognised quality management standards.

Importantly, all ten water and sanitation depots, together with the department as a whole, have now achieved accreditation.

The city said the certification will enhance operational efficiency, improve productivity, standardise procedures, and strengthen customer satisfaction.

The recognition is also expected to reinforce public trust by ensuring greater consistency and reliability in water and sanitation services across the metro.

The certification also comes on the heels of the metro’s strong performance in the 2026 Blue Drop and Green Drop assessments, adding to a growing list of accomplishments in the water and sanitation sector.
