Meet 10-year-old Hlelo Boleu, the Kwa-Thema netball talent dreaming of playing for South Africa
Ten-year-old Hlelo Boleu is chasing her dream of representing South Africa through hard work, discipline and a passion for netball despite overcoming challenges on the court
Kwa-Thema – Hlelo Boleu (10) is already proving that determination and hard work can outweigh any obstacle on the netball court.
The young player, who plays as a goal attacker (GA) and goal shooter (GS), has developed a passion for scoring goals and hopes one day to wear the South African national team’s colours.
“I enjoy playing these positions because I can shoot, and it gives me the thrill to play and score even more goals,” she said.
Boleu discovered her love for netball at the age of seven. Drawn by the excitement of the game, she quickly found a sense of belonging on the court.
“I was drawn to netball because I felt the endurance it requires when I started playing, and I loved the energy and the strong sense of sisterhood in the game,” she explained.
Although her first match was far from perfect, it became the start of an exciting journey.
“My first game was messy and exhausting. I kept running out of my assigned area on the court, but when I scored my first goal, I felt incredibly happy,” Boleu added.
Her parents have been among her biggest supporters since the beginning. Her parents encouraged her to play netball.
She realised that she belonged on the court. Her parents have never let her down. Despite playing in a position traditionally dominated by taller players, Hlelo refused to let her height limit her ambitions.

“My biggest challenge was my height because goal shooters are usually tall. I overcame it by working on my jump shooting and improving my footwork,” she cited.
One of her proudest moments came during a match against Selpark.
“My favourite memory was scoring a long-distance goal against Selpark,” she expressed.
To sharpen her skills, Boleu dedicates time to practising her shooting technique.
“I train my arms and learn how to hold the ball correctly so that I can improve my shooting.
“My biggest motivation comes from thinking about what my dreams could one day achieve,” she said.
“I keep pushing myself because I think about what my dreams will open up for me.”
Boleu credits her coach as her greatest role model. She mentioned that her coach inspires her because she listens to everything her coach teaches, and her team wins because of her tips.
Her ambitions stretch far beyond local competitions.
“My dream is to play for the South African national team and earn a scholarship. I definitely see myself playing professionally and securing professional contracts in the future,” she added.

Away from the court, Boleu enjoys singing and dancing, but she hopes people will remember her for much more than her sporting ability.
“I want people to know that I am a generous, kind and supportive teammate,” said Boleu.
“Netball has taught me discipline, time management and how to stay calm when things get tough.”
Her message to other young athletes is simple but powerful, saying never ever give up, follow your dreams and never lose your discipline.
As she continues to develop her game, Boleu hopes her legacy will be one of commitment and reliability.
