Clinton Cloete’s inspiring journey – overcoming adversity on the rugby field
Helpmekaar Kollege’s star player shares how perseverance, family, and coaching led him through injury challenges to greatness.
In the world of sports, overcoming obstacles is a common thing, but how one responds to those challenges, that is what defines their character.
For inside centre player for Helpmekaar Kollege Clinton Cloete, a Grade 12 student and a seasoned player who has donned the first team jersey, this truth resonates deeply.
After playing for the U16 Grant Khomo team in 2023, and the Lions U17 team in 2024, Clinton faced significant hurdles. Reflecting on his journey, Clinton shared: “One of the challenges I had to overcome was injuries.”
Cloete sustained a shoulder injury last year, resulting in him having to get surgery, which hindered his playing time.
These setbacks tested his perseverance and determination, but he found strength in the support of those around him. “I give thanks to my parents and coaches for helping me push through my challenges, and become stronger,” he expressed.
Through these trials, Clinton learned valuable lessons about the unpredictability of sports and life. “Not everything is always guaranteed,” he noted, emphasising that resilience is key in the face of adversity.
Overcoming these obstacles has not only shaped his athletic career but has also contributed to his personal growth. “I became a stronger and better person, after every obstacle I beat.”
Clinton’s experiences have also inspired him to offer advice to fellow athletes facing their own challenges. “You aren’t alone. You don’t have to go through the obstacles on your own. It’s worth it to overcome them.” He encouraged others to seek support and remain steadfast in their pursuits. For Clinton, overcoming these challenges was crucial.
“Because every challenge you overcome is a step closer to success,” he affirmed, underscoring the importance of resilience in achieving one’s goals.
As he prepares for the upcoming rugby season, Clinton stands as a beacon of power, perseverance and support in the face of adversity.
His journey serves as an inspiration to athletes everywhere, reminding them that obstacles are not the end but rather a stepping stone to greater achievements.
