GRACE Trinity School for Girls learners took off March 13 and 14 to give back to the Alberton SPCA.

As part of their school syllabus, 10 girls from Grades Eight to 11, do community outreach work by helping to clean-up the SPCA clinic. The outreach programmes are done twice a year. Some learners also volunteered. Similar outreach programmes included going to children’s homes, visiting old age homes and orphanages.

Among other things, the dedicated group assisted the clinic by cleaning storerooms, food stacking and washing the bowls and more.

Mandi Visser, a teacher at the school, said she valued helping the clinic and it was their way of giving back to the community.

“I loved every moment of this. I respect the fact that this was a way of making children understand what life is about; that life does not just come easy for everyone. It encouraged them to give back to the needy and to help animals in the clinic,” said Visser.

K’hi Ntenwi, a Grade Eight learner, extended her gratitude. She said she felt good by making a difference for the first time.

“This outreach was interesting and motivated me to help those who are in need. Through this, we were able to bond as a group while working. I wish to see more people making their way to the clinic to adopt stray pets,” she said.

Kingstone Siziba, general manager at the Alberton SPCA, commended the group’s selfless deed.

“We support this initiative by the school and we encourage more learners to do likewise. Children who grow up with animals have an understanding of relationships and tend to respect other individuals. Today’s generation should engage in such activities that will instil discipline,” he said.
