The City of Ekurhuleni has responded to concerns about a water leak and growing hole in Sandwich Bay, Elandshaven, after residents reported that the problem had remained unresolved for several months.

According to the City, the matter was received on August 17 and the site was inspected on the same day.

The City confirmed that the cause of the leak was a connection pipe crossing the road.

“Repairs were carried out on the leaking pipe on the same day, August 17,” said Zweli Dlamini, spokesperson for the City of Ekurhuleni.

However, while the water leak has been repaired, the damage to the road has not yet been fully addressed.

The City said reinstatement teams have been allocated to finalise the road repairs and confirmed that the work is expected to be carried out by August 25.

This means residents may need to wait for a separate team to attend to the road damage after the water leak itself has been repaired.

A resident, Janine Pieterse, who raised concerns about the matter, said it appeared that the water leak had been fixed, but the hole in the ground remained.

The ongoing concern is now whether the damaged road will be properly reinstated and when the area will be made safe for residents and road users.
