Mayberry Park resident celebrates her birthday by giving back

Akhona Maserumule decided to celebrate her special day by donating food hampers to Mayberry Park’s job seekers on August 10.

Birthdays are normally celebrated with parties where a deliciously made cake is presented, but Akhona Maserumule who celebrated her 31st birthday did the unexpected.

Unlike many, she decided to celebrate her special day by donating food hampers to Mayberry Park’s job seekers on August 10.

This was a month after she handed over food hampers to the unemployed who station themselves at the traffic lights of JG Strijdom Road.

Maserumule, who moved to the area four years ago, truly touched the hearts of many with the help of family and friends who made the event a success. The generously donated hampers contained maize meal, a large portion of sugar, cooking oil, tinned fish and beans.

She said she believes God has put it in her heart to be a blessing in the midst of this trying situation.

“I’m delighted that I am able to help other people and this was the best way of celebrating my birthday. This is my 30s chapter and I’m now looking forward to facing more upcoming years. I am grateful to my friends and family for their continuous support,” said Maserumule.

Following a recent article published by the RECORD, she said she received a positive response from people who also wanted to lend a helping hand.

“In the previous article, people heard my story and offered to donate. I didn’t even go dipping into my pockets, it seems the more I help out is the more people also come on board to assist. I’m also looking at starting my non-governmental organisation where I can assist even more people,” she said.
