Couple celebrates 54 years of being married
"People should sort out their differences before they even go to bed."
The saying ‘it was love at first sight’ has strongly proved to be true for Connie (74) and Hennie Scheepers (77) who have enjoyed 54 years together.
October 1 will mark the couple’s memorable day as they will celebrate their anniversary after being married for 54 years.
Hennie, who owns Li-Li Men’s Hairdressers, a Florentia-based barbershop, said this day signifies many wonderful years he has shared with his loving wife.
“I only knew her for about three months before we got engaged and eventually got married in the same year. We had three children. We only have the two daughters left. From the first day we met I knew she would be my life partner,” said Hennie.
In the many years they have been together, the inseparable pair has shared memories such as travelling in many parts of the country.
“We once went to Mauritius for a week and we would often tour throughout the country. We loved to enjoy life but with time as we grew older we decided to get rid of our caravan,” he said.
They told the RECORD their recipe for a happy marriage was basing their relationship on love, trust and perseverance.
Connie said: “Like other couples we would have our disagreements, but we conquered them with love. When you have Jesus in your heart, you have God’s love and when you have God’s love you eventually love each other. People should sort out their differences before they even go to bed.”
Hennie described his wife as an affectionate person who puts others first, while Connie fondly described him as an understanding and supportive husband.
