Local environmentalist introduces system to assist recyclers

Linda Murray, who owns a printing company Impact Print, has stepped up to introduce a system that will ease the burden on recyclers.
For at least five years, Murray has assisted recyclers immensely in sorting out and packing recyclables in a separate plastic bag each week.
The Raceview resident encourages the community to sort out waste separately before putting it out for waste collection.
“Each week when I put my dustbin out I make sure that the clear bags are on top so that the recyclers don’t have to dig in. The black bags can really be smelly for them and this can be very degrading. I think this can make everybody’s life a lot easier,” she said.
The environmentalist aims to leave a footprint of living green and in turn encouraging people to recycle more.
Murray recalled that this was inspired by Ugu District Municipality, which governs the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast.
“The whole thing came about from the system that works in South Coast. They issued residents black bags and clear bags, with clear bags being used to take in recyclables while black bags took in everything that needed to be dumped,” she said.
She also said the waste would then be sorted at the dumping site according to the kind of recyclable material.
“If we were to introduce this system here in Alberton, the guys would simply take those recyclables from the clear bags out of the bins. “It’s a very easy system and I’ve been doing it for years now and it helps to avoid a spill,” said Murray.
Not only is she convinced that this system will be of great help to recyclers, but she considers this to also help the planet in terms of going green.
She told the RECORD that she is willing to print stickers that encourages separating recyclables. For any information, contact Linda Murray via email on linda@impactprint.co.za
