WATCH: Warehouse crumbled after catching fire in Elandshaven

Fire and rescue teams from the City of Ekurhuleni pulled together to fight two blazing fires on October 15.

The first was a fire at a paper recycling company that burst into flames at around 4.10am.

While crews were battling the blaze at the corner of Power and Sigma roads in Germiston South, another structural fire was reported in Houtbaai Street, Culverwell Industrial Park, Elandshaven, which is a stone’s throw from the recycling company.

This call was received at 8.16am.

Firefighters from Alberton, assisted by teams from Zonkizizwe, Palm Ridge, Hlahatsi and Thokoza fire stations, responded to the call. A total of 48 firefighters, including officers and a fleet of eight fire engines in their different expertise, extinguished it.

Offensive fire suppression was the initial manoeuvre applied to prevent possible fire spread to the nearby warehouses.

The team was divided into three to battle the blaze from three extents. At midday on the same day the fire was contained and brought under control.

The team is damping down (cooling off) the hot spots. The structure’s metal section crumbled due to excessive heat from the burnt contents. Food was burnt to ashes inside the warehouse.

The cause of the fire is undetermined; however, preliminary information received on scene stated it might have been caused by an electrical fault.

After completion and implementation of safety measures on the scene, investigations will be conducted to determine the actual cause.  No casualties are reported on scene as a result of fire.
