Alberton SPCA pays tribute to community’s most-loved Granny
Alberton SPCA pays tribute to its former volunteer Joyce Hayes who died on January 15.
Condolences have been pouring in after the death of Alberton SPCA former volunteer Joyce Hayes on January 15.
The 91-year-old animal lover will be remembered for actively dedicating her services to the Alberton SPCA, where she volunteered for nearly 15 years.
Affectionately known as Granny, she volunteered at the SPCA’s flea market every Saturday where she sold pre-loved clothes and shoes to locals.
Christine Cornall, Alberton SPCA committee member, told the RECORD that it was very rare for Hayes to miss her duties.
“She loved offering her services to the clinic and was present each weekend until she left for the United Kingdom to live with her daughter. She was known by many who attended the flea market,” she said.
She lived in Brackenhurst, and later moved to Elandshaven a year before permanently moving to England in 2018.
Upon arriving in Alberton, she first worked for Unitrans, working for the company until retiring at age 60.
During her time at the SPCA, she is said to have touched the lives of many through her gentle and caring nature.
Her eldest daughter, Christine Bester, said: “She was loved by many and always had time for everyone and loved to chat. She was a good and loving mother. She will forever be missed by all who knew her.”
