Help make Alberton Meal Drive an even bigger success

The Alberton Meal Drive was started on December 22 to provide a meal to the destitute people in the Alberton area.

“Whether it be a breakfast, lunch or dinner, we sought to bring that wonderful feeling of receiving something special to needy people in the spirit of the new year, especially recognising the misery and desperation that this awful pandemic has brought to so many vulnerable families in 2020,” said Ashley Kokt, the founder of the Alberton Meal Drive.

“Within the first week, we were dismayed to observe that the need for food was immensely more acute than we had imagined. So we set out on a dedicated mission to gather as much support and as many donations as possible. We are thankful to have distributed over 5 900 meals in the just over seven weeks that the drive has been active.”

For his work with the Meal Drive, Ashley was appointed as one of Ward 38’s Community Champions. As of February 10, they had raised a staggering R48 900 to help feed those in need in Alberton. The money was raised from donations from companies, individuals, schools, students, friends and family.

“Our R100 hamper contains a single meal for up to eight people, while the R200 hamper feeds up to 18,” said Ashley.

“We are incredibly grateful to Pick n Pay Lemon Tree for putting those parcels together for us at cost price.”

While the drive has made a difference in many people’s lives, Ashley said the demand has outstripped what they are able to do with the donations.

“We need your ongoing support,” he said. “We can make a difference in Alberton, so let us continue to make this meal drive a huge success.”

The Alberton Meal Drive is calling on all of the companies in Alberton to come on board to join their efforts, as well as individuals who would like to help make a difference.
