WATCH: Substation fire leaves Alberton residents without power

Ward 37 councillor Tiaan Kotzé said the power will be restored by 3pm.

Most parts in Alberton are left without power after a fire broke out at the Ring Road East and Du Plessis Road Substation on Thursday afternoon.

According to reports on the scene, business owners just heard a big explosion followed by smoke.

William Ntladi, DEMS spokesperson, said emergency services received a call at around 12.20 pm and upon arrival, they found the substation on fire and one of the cables was burning.

“We suspect that cable theft led to the fire,” he said.

No injuries have been reported during this incident.  The cause of the fire remains unknown at this stage.

Ward 37 councillor Tiaan Kotzé said the power will be restored by 3pm.
