City of Ekurhuleni’s Disasters and Emergency Management Services spokesperson William Ntladi said a male adult patient was fatally wounded by a passing vehicle and sustained intense head and upper body injuries.

“Apparently, that happened after the vehicle in which he was travelling in as a passenger crashed against road barriers and the driver managed to steer it to safety. Immediately after the driver brought the vehicle under control, he got out and walked across the freeway that’s when a sedan knocked him over and died instantly,” he said.

“On arrival at the scene, rescuers from the Alberton fire station, found the patient lying supine in the middle of the freeway. Paramedics initiated medical treatment but unfortunately, he (patient) couldn’t respond positively and as a result, he was declared dead on the scene,” said Ntladi.

Three lanes of the freeway were temporarily closed for traffic while only one lane was left operational.

Ntladi added that rescuers received the call at 20:21 in the evening and maintained scene safety till the entire operation was complete.

The investigation is conducted by law enforcement officials from the City of Ekurhuleni. An update will follow as soon as more information becomes available.
