Ward 38 invited to vote for their ward committee representatives

Ward 38 elections will take place on Tuesday at Alberton Civic Centre.

Councillor Malcolm Maifala-Masebe invites residents of Brackenhurst and Brackendowns to take part in voting for their Ward Committee representatives at a public meeting to be held at the Alberton Civic Centre, the Conference Room on March 29.

The meeting will start at 18:30 and will take approximately an hour.

Following the nomination process, members of the public are now encouraged to take place in electing ward representatives who will work together with the ward councillor in addressing issues of service delivery.

According to Maifala-Masebe, the ward councillor supports the legal framework as per The Constitution of The Republic of South Africa, Section 152(e), which stipulates that one of the objects of Local Government is ‘to encourage the involvement of communities and community organisations in the matters of Local Government’.

“Furthermore, section 72 (1) of the Municipal Structures act 117 of 1998 read with section 73 (1), as amended, states that the Municipality must establish a ward committee for each ward in the municipality,” he said.

He said not only is the establishment of ward committee a legal framework that governs local government, but it is also a necessary structure that encourages public participation in a municipality.

“Residents who are registered to vote and live in Ward 38 should therefore take this opportunity to be part of the strengthening of democracy and public participation in the area,” Maifala-Masebe said.
