Ward 38 announces new committee members
Following an announcement made by councillor Malcolm Maifala-Masebe of electing new ward committee members on March 29, the results have been issued out.
Brackenhurst and Brackendowns councillor Malcolm Maifala-Masebe recently declared the names of the new role players as mandated by council processes and relevant legislation.
This follows the ward committee elections that took place at Alberton Civic Centre on March 29.
New committee members will be in office for Ward 38 for the 2021 to 2026 term.
According to the councillor, the ward committee is established in line with the legal framework of the South African constitution.
With regards to the constitution, section 152 (e), states the objects of local government is to encourage the involvement of communities and community organisations in the matters of local government.
Moreover, section 72 (1) of the Municipal Structures Act 117 of 1998 along with section 73 (1), as amended, states that the municipality must establish a ward committee for each ward in the municipality.
“I believe in the participatory democracy which ensures residents’ views are reflected in the decisions council takes,” said the councillor.
The new Ward 38 committee members and their roles are as follows:
• Boitumelo Marks Ramasike – aged and disabled
• Chante Stroh – infrastructure
• Gavin James Schutte – community safety
• Lulama Jodo – youth
• Mlungisi Lawrence Jodo – health and social development
• Sarel Jacob du Preez – faith-based organisations
• Sello Sithole – economic development and city planning
• Twanette Schutte – environmental development
• Valerie Jodo – women and children
• Yoliswa Maphalala – sports, heritage recreation, arts and culture
