Work to restore water in some parts of Alberton hits another delay

Work to restore water supply to some parts of Alberton following a damaged steel pipe for more than two weeks has hit yet another snag resulting in further delays.

The City of Ekurhuleni’s water technical teams are working around the clock to repair the damaged steel pipe crossing under the R556 provincial road, which has affected the water supply to some parts of Alberton.

According to Ekurhuleni spokesperson, Zweli Dlamini, they are closely monitoring the supply of water to all affected communities to ensure their water needs are met.

“Work on the site to repair the steel pipe crossing under the R556 provincial road was compromised by the heavy rains experienced in the past few days,” he said.

The pipe is located 4 metres underground and the rain has made the excavated area very damp and filled with water. This state is rendering working conditions risky for the technical teams.

Dlamini said this new reality means that the envisaged timelines for the completion of the repairs by today, Tuesday, April 5 will inevitably move up by a few days.

The City estimates to complete the work on or before Friday, April 8, depending on the conditions on-site.

Municipal encourages affected members to make use of the deployed Jojo tanks, roving water tankers and activated taps.

“To minimize the impact on affected communities, we have deployed Jojo tanks, roving water tankers and activated hydrant taps. Affected members of the community are encouraged to make full use of these interventions,” added Dlamini.

The City of Ekurhuleni wishes to apologise for the inconvenience caused.
