Councillor slams vandalism of street lights on busy road

Ward 94 councillor Samantha Nair has lashed out on vandalism of street lights stating that this is a threat to nearby businesses.

Ward 94 councillor Samantha Nair has expressed great concern about an increase in the theft of copper cables and vandalism of street lights on Alrode’s busy road.

Not only does the vandalism of street lights adversely affect nearby businesses, it also affects motorists using the route at night.

According to Nair, the vandalism of street lights starts from Dan Jacobs Street and goes right down to Vereeniging Road.

Councillor Samantha Nair points at a street light where copper cables have been ripped out completely.

On close inspection, copper wires from the damaged street lights seem to have been pulled out completely.

“It’s a big concern and also a threat to businesses. Whoever is vandalising these street lights is damaging council property and those responsible should be held accountable. It’s absolutely dangerous to drive out here at night, especially because there are too many potholes on this road,” she explained.

Alrode’s Vereeniging Road is plagued with vandalised street lights.

Nair said most street lights from the busy street are gone and that it seems as though they were cut or forcefully broken down.

“This damage happened over two months ago, and this is after I got a complaint from nearby businesses. And it’s most likely that this vandalism is done at night because then nobody sees them. Highlighting this issue will hopefully help raise awareness. If we catch them they will be fined for theft and destroying council property,” she said.

She said she will escalate the matter to the relevant departments and that crucial measures to safeguard this property will be taken.
