Karate champ (11) appeals for help from the community

Alexcia Andrade desperately needs financial assistance ahead of her trip to the World Karate Championships in the United States.

In a month’s time, Alexcia Andrade is set to leave for the United States, on June 30, and desperately needs the community’s help to make the trip a success.

Alexcia, from Cobras Shotokan Karate Club, has been chosen to represent South Africa during the World Karate Championships (WUKF) in Fort Lauderdale.

Initially, she needed to cover costs summing up to R70 000 to be able to fly the South African flag high. She now needs R40 000 to cover her outstanding expenses.

A fund-raiser event was recently hosted at New Market in an effort to raise funds for her trip to the USA.
According to her mother, Kerry Andrade, their recent fund-raiser was declared a huge success, however, they are still in need of more funds.

“We managed to get the deposit paid. We are now pushing to cover visas and book tickets. Unfortunately, we are running out of time and there is a big push. From our point of view, this would mean the world to Alexcia. This is the second time that she has been chosen to represent SA,” she said.

The Grade Five learner from South Crest is best described by her mother as an outstanding all-rounder who will not give up without a fight.

She won gold in her age group for kata and kumite at the South Africa Championships, which were held in September 2021. And she has won 10 gold medals and was awarded best overall karateka at her dojo in 2021.

“In 2019 she was chosen to go to Poland and unfortunately due to Covid-19 all that was cancelled. She pushes and trains really hard. We are going to push every avenue to get her there. She is in first red belt division currently, and when she goes over she will be in purple belt,” explained Kerry.

Those who wish to donate may make it through her BackaBuddy page or send an email to kerryalexcia1@gmail.com, alternatively, contact her mother on 081 735 9919.
