Councillor offers solution to Alberton Primary’s narrow single-lane
Interested parties conducted an oversight inspection at Alberton Primary School following concerns.
DA Gauteng Shadow MEC for Education, Khume Ramulifho and Ward 106 councillor Tim Denny conducted an oversight inspection at Alberton Primary School on June 9.
They met with the school’s management to discuss insights and complaints arising from community members.
This follows an incident where a learner was knocked over by a vehicle outside the school premises.
Parents and community members have since stressed the importance of a scholar patrol team to guide learners when crossing the road in a prescribed manner.
The school has about 1 400 learners with most learners using transport and needing to be picked up and dropped off at a certain point while others need to cross the street.
Ward 106 Clr Tim Denny said: “Current scholar patrols need to be beefed up and improved greatly for the protection of the children. Currently, it seemed to be ineffective patrolling and controlling the children as they leave the school.”
After being in talks with the school management, Denny, alongside Ramulifho, came up with a solution to alleviate these concerns.
“The meeting has come to a wonderful conclusion and solutions have been formed. They are going to need the buy-in of businesses and the community for a different proposed drop-off and collection zone. There is a solution to this ongoing problem of thousands of children leaving the school in a narrow single-lane road which is prone to accidents,” said Denny.
He told the Alberton RECORD there will be a follow-up meeting followed by a site visit to the newly proposed drop-off and collection sight.

On the day, Denny also managed to have contractors come up to commence work on the school’s paving and to also have vandalised street lights fixed to ensure safety.
“We are going to try making the outer environment far safer and appealingly pleasing to the eye because at night it’s scary. The good news is that things are now happening, but I’m also appealing for the community’s support in making all this work possible,” he said.
Ramulifho expressed his satisfaction with the meeting, which was declared a huge success.
“We will continue with the proposed meeting and also see that the proposed planning is not done by the school alone but to invite everyone. For me what is important is finding a solution and implementing it for the safety of our children,” he said.
