Operation in motion to deal with pitched tents in Alberton

After receiving numerous calls from community members, EMPD members are conducting a clean-up operation.

Members of the EMPD recently visited several areas within Alberton to remove pitched tents that have gone up rapidly.

This comes after concerns from locals describing the situation as an eye-sore.

The EMPD has confirmed that it has previously received calls about growing numbers of pitched tents.

EMPD spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa said they are taking action.

She assured the Alberton RECORD a clean-up operation is imminent.

“We are aware of the situation. The challenge we are faced with is that those who do pitch tents simply relocate when we force them to leave. We intend to roping in other departments and stakeholders, to deal with the problem once and for all,” said Thepa.

Thepa said each time they respond to these calls, they take photographs.

“We recently visited Ring Road West and Alwyn Taljaard roads near Alberton civic centre. We also visited the open veld opposite Lemon Tree shopping centre, and Du Plessis Road by the taxi rank,” she said.
