MMC dissatisfied with progress done at transfer station

MMC for environment and waste management, André du Plessis, sought remedial action in getting work done at Heidelberg Road Transfer Station.

MMC for Environment and Waste Management André du Plessis will soon go back to Heidelberg Road Transfer Station to see improvements done so far.

This is after du Plessis committed to having the transfer station restored to normal functionality.

Weeks ago he visited the station, prompted by a need to investigate numerous complaints of illegal dumping in the area and poor service at the station.

Various complaints were brought to the office of the mayor about the unpleasant state of the station, including other related service delivery issues.

Since the clean-up took off and following his recent visit to the site, du Plessis has expressed his dissatisfaction.

“I’m disappointed at the lack of security. I found one guard sleeping at the main gate, with no guards patrolling and chasing the waste pickers off the site. The organic material has not been removed and is still a fire hazard,” explained du Plessis.

He reiterated that he is disappointed in the lack of management, resulting in staff sitting around and not directing residents where to dump their rubbish.

Du Plessis said he is dissatisfied with the fact that the fence was not erected along the entrance service road.

“I have taken many photos plus videos, which I immediately sent to the HOD of environmental resource and waste management, requesting urgent intervention and consequence management plus immediate remedial action to get the site sorted out,” he said.

He said some areas with normal skips are fairly clean but not yet up to standard. He assured that he will be following up.
