Danie and Susan cherish their 29th anniversary
It was love at first sight, and it was at that moment the sportsman knew he would tie the knot with his (now) wife of 29 years, Susan Putter.
October 1 marked 29 years that Susan and Danie Putter have spent together, and many have found inspiration from their marriage.
Thirty-one years ago, at a community meeting, Danie saw Susan sitting with her parents, her two sisters and three brothers in front of him. He tapped her on her shoulder and winked at her to show his affection.
“It wasn’t easy, but it took her some time to realise I’m a catcher, and she fell for me. We got married and had our first son, Donavin, and five years later, we had Jason. They are well known in Alberton. Susan means a lot to me and supports my busy life.
“When it’s time to speed up, she reminds and supports me. And when I’m not balanced, she will step in and tell me where to draw the line,” explained Danie.
They started their anniversary celebration by attending church together, followed by a social gathering before packing their bags for a weekend away.
The couple has also shared many fond memories and looks forward to more loving years together.
A former Madalas chairperson, Danie (51), has worn more than one hat. He founded the Alberton Madalas, was a former chairperson of the Alberton Rugby Club, and was president of the Golden Lions body.
Throughout Danie’s success, Susan (48), who shares similar interests with her husband, has been a pillar of strength.
According to Danie, Susan is a gym fanatic who enjoys working out and recently took up rugby.
“Last week in Bloemfontein, she played rugby with our Alberton Madalas Golden Oldies, who call themselves the Madaliefies. I was in tears and proud of her. Just when I said I’m hanging up the boots for athletics, she now starts playing rugby,” he said.
He reiterated that as a testament to his wife’s support system, they started several boxing clubs together, and “whatever I do, she’s my right hand”, he added.
“I think our recipe for the success of our marriage is placing God first and allowing Him to be in control of our lives. We gave a lot of time and energy to Alberton and will still do that. To all the men out there – a happy wife is a happy life,” said Danie.
