2 suspects killed in shootout with Hawks on R59
Police reported that investigations are ongoing to determine whether the suspects were involved in other serious robberies.
Two suspects were shot dead during a shootout with the Hawks’ Tactical Operations Management Section (TOMS) on the R59 in Alberton on September 6.
According to Hawks spokesperson Katlego Mogale, authorities received information about the suspect and the vehicle, which they followed up on.
“The identified suspect’s vehicle made its way towards the R59 and upon realisation that the multi-disciplinary team was tactically approaching, the suspects fired at police,” she said.
Mogale said a shootout followed as the police returned fire, fatally wounding two suspects inside the vehicle, which had false registration plates.
“Although the vehicle continued to escape, it eventually crashed into a ditch.”
Mogale added that police recovered two unlicensed firearms, a rifle and a handgun, along with ammunition, cellphones, gloves, and other evidence. Investigations are ongoing.
Tyrone van der Merwe, Sales Director of CPS Security, stated that police helicopters have arrived on the R59 between Kliprivier Road and Swartkoppies Road.
The roads have been closed to traffic, and motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes.
