Polo gang seemingly operating in Alberton, Joburg South areas
These past few days, police and security officers have confronted criminal elements operating in Alberton and Joburg South areas.
The Alberton and Johannesburg South areas have seemingly been the operational hotspot of the so-called ‘Polo gang.’
These are a group of organised and notorious criminals targeting VW Polo drivers. A few incidents stand out.
In the early hours of March 26, thieves stole a silver VW Polo in Brackendowns, Alberton. CCTV footage shows these criminals tampering with the gate motor of the residential complex where they stole the car.

In the early hours of March 27, CPS Security and Gauteng traffic police tracked a stolen VW Polo to the N12 Highway.
The suspect drove off when he realised he was being tailed by law enforcement and a brief chase ensued. The suspect evaded arrest. However, the VW polo was recovered and returned to the owner.
CPS Security urged motorists to be vigilant of a gang targeting estates and complexes.
Another high-speed chase ensued on the N12 highway in the early hours of April 1, where Gauteng traffic police and CPS Security officers gave chase on a suspect driving a VW Polo that was stolen in Dawn Park.
The suspect drove through Linmeyer, and the vehicle ground to a halt in Townsview. The suspect managed to flee on foot and evade arrest. But the stolen vehicle was recovered.
One Polo gang member was unlucky. Various law enforcement agencies, CPS Security, and Tracker South Africa nabbed a suspect driving a VW Polo that was reported stolen in Wadeville.
The vehicle was tracked to the N12 Highway, the suspect was caught while driving the stolen vehicle.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect was linked to multiple car theft cases and is part of a large motor vehicle theft syndicate.
