Sky City residents march after woman (34) stabbed to death

Community members, neighbours and church representatives marched to Masuku’s home, where they held a candle-lighting ceremony in her memory and called for greater awareness of abuse.

Sky City residents took to the streets in memory of Phumzile Masuku (34), who was stabbed to death on Saturday, calling for an end to gender-based violence (GBV) and urging victims to seek help when they experience abuse.

The march, organised by Sihlangene Rekopane Sky Forum on Thursday, saw community members, neighbours and representatives from local churches walk from Sky City Mall to Masuku’s home.

The march concluded with candle-lighting beside the gate of her home, as those gathered paid tribute to Masuku and reflected on the devastating impact of GBV on families and communities.

Community church leader and Sihlangene Rekopane Sky Forum member Lindiwe Kunene urged women experiencing abuse to speak out and leave abusive relationships rather than wait for situations to escalate.

Kunene said Masuku’s death should serve as a lesson to women about the dangers of staying in abusive relationships, emphasising the importance of seeking help and prioritising their safety.

Neighbour hears scream

A neighbour who attended the march said she heard a scream on the day of the incident.

She said she contacted nearby neighbours to ask them to come and assist, as she was afraid to approach the situation alone.

However, by the time they arrived, it was too late to save Masuku.

The neighbour expressed regret over what had happened, questioning whether a quicker response could have made a difference.

Family appeals for support

The suspect, whom the Kliprivier SAPS arrested in connection with the alleged murder, is expected to appear in court on Tuesday.

Masuku’s family appealed to community members to attend the court proceedings and support them as the case moves forward.

The family said community support was important to keep attention on the case and ensure the legal process moves forward.
