Dumisani Masilela Theatre to undergo temporary closure for upgrades

The City of Ekurhuleni has announced the temporary closure of the Dumisani Masilela Theatre as maintenance and upgrade work gets under way at the arts facility.

The Dumisani Masilela Theatre will temporarily close its doors from May 15 to July 31 as the City of Ekurhuleni undertakes renovations and maintenance to improve the popular arts venue.

The city announced that no external bookings will be accepted during the closure period while upgrades are carried out at the facility.

According to the municipality, the planned work will include installing new fencing, improving the theatre stage, and maintaining the roof.

The project is expected to enhance safety and improve the overall experience for performers and theatre patrons.

Despite the temporary shutdown, some internal programmes already scheduled will continue to operate on a partial basis.

These include the Ekurhuleni Young-Stars Outreach Programme, set to run from June 22 to 27 at the main theatre, the Artistic Masterclass programme from May 22 to July 19 across overflow venues, including the theatre, and the Youth Month Artistic Programme taking place from June 15 to 20 at the OR Tambo Cultural Precinct and the main theatre.

Artists and organisations seeking alternative theatre venues during the closure have been advised to use the Ken Gampu Theatre, which remains open for bookings.

The City of Ekurhuleni apologised for the inconvenience caused and said it looks forward to welcoming theatre lovers back to an upgraded and improved facility at the end of the renovation period.
