Baby Lemé beats cancer
Lemé Potgieter finally fought and conquered advanced neuroblastoma cancer.
It was a heart-warming experience for parents Juandré and Simoné Potgieter as their beautiful daughter Lemé rang the bell on October 13, being declared cancer-free.
For her parents, Lemé is a miracle baby whose heart at one stage stopped at least twice during her stay in the hospital and after a long journey, she has completed her treatment.
Her life journey started at only 29 weeks young. She was prematurely born on August 6, 2

Lemé’s mother Simoné first noticed a lump on her back and immediately took her to the doctor for checkups. Dr Tanya Schickerling of Netcare Alberton Hospital confirmed that little Lemé was diagnosed with neuroblastoma and that she had a very good chance of surviving because of her age.
“We then received the shocking news that Lemé did not only have cancer but that it was in stage four.
Fortunately, her doctor reacted quickly and scheduled three chemotherapy sessions, each lasting three days with21-day intervals,” explained Simoné.

During the momentous occasion of ringing the bell, in relief, Simoné confirmed that they have beaten cancer and that this was an overwhelming experience.
“I’m still in shock and I don’t know how to feel, especially because of all the things we have been through as a family. I used to call Schickerling nonstop because of the problems we encountered and I’m grateful for her assistance. Lemé recently started school and she is doing very well,” she said.

As per custom, the day ended with little Lemé being showered with gifts and receiving her end-of-treatment cancer champion medal, accompanied by gifts from her doctor and Cupcakes of Hope.
