Ekurhuleni earns global ISO certification for water and sanitation services

Ekurhuleni has become one of only two metropolitan municipalities in South Africa to receive ISO 9001:2015 certification for its water and sanitation services, with the achievement celebrated at the Alberton Civic Centre.

The City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) marked a major milestone at the Alberton Civic Centre after officially receiving ISO 9001:2015 certification for its water and sanitation services.

The certification, awarded by the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS), places Ekurhuleni among only two metropolitan municipalities in the country to achieve the internationally recognised standard.

MMC for Metro Operations and Maintenance Ald Nomadlozi Nkosi and MMC for Metro Trading Utilities Jean Sthato officiated the celebration, while SABS head of division Katina Temba presented the certification to the City’s head of department for water and sanitation, Thokozani Maseko. Acting city manager Dr Tsholofelo Koopedi also attended the event.

According to the City, all 10 water and sanitation depots and all five divisions within the department have now been accredited by SABS, confirming that their operating systems and procedures comply with international quality management standards.

ISO 9001:2015 is a globally recognised certification that assesses how organisations manage the delivery, efficiency, accountability, and continuous improvement of water and sanitation services.

In the public sector, the certification is often used to strengthen service reliability and improve customer confidence.

For residents, the accreditation means the City’s water and sanitation systems are being managed according to internationally accepted quality processes aimed at improving consistency, monitoring and service standards.

City officials said the achievement reflects Ekurhuleni’s commitment to safe drinking water, reliable sanitation services and sustainable infrastructure management.

Nkosi described the certification as an important step in strengthening service delivery across the metro, while Sthato said the recognition demonstrates the municipality’s commitment to meeting global best practice standards.

The City said the accreditation will also help improve operational accountability and support ongoing efforts to maintain water quality and sanitation services across Ekurhuleni.
