In memory of Andre Human, a respected colleague, mentor, and family man

In memory of Andre Human.

In a heartfelt farewell, family, friends and colleagues said their goodbyes to André Human, a dedicated law enforcement officer, mentor and cherished family member.

André, who battled cancer for two and a half years, passed away on January 4 at Stepping Stone Hospice, surrounded by his loving sisters, just six weeks after the loss of his father, Roelof Johannes Human, on November 23.

A fearless man

André was born on May 19, 1973, and he grew up alongside his three sisters in Durban before the family relocated to Alberton in 1985.

He completed his primary education at Laerskool Randhart and later matriculated at Hoërskool Marais Viljoen High in 1992.

Following his passion for justice and a safer community, André commenced his career at SAPS on April 30, 1994.
On May 1, 1994, he embarked on a distinguished journey with law enforcement, now known as EMPD.

André’s career with EMPD was marked by dedication and distinction.

Starting as an official, he climbed the ranks and concluded his illustrious career with the title of inspector. His impactful role in the drug unit under Superintendent Deon Singh contributed significantly to numerous successful court convictions.

André’s responsibilities included vehicle maintenance, training and mentoring and his colleagues admired him for his expertise and willingness to share knowledge.

In 2023, André’s bravery was officially recognised with a silver cross for an incident in 2013, reflecting his commitment to serving and protecting his community. His work was not merely a job but a passion that he cherished since childhood, fulfilling his dream of becoming a policeman.

A special human being

Beyond his professional life, he played a vital role as a father figure for his sister, Antoinette Foord’s sons, teaching them valuable life skills and serving as their mentor.

“As sisters, we had André for 50 years but always had to share him, as he was so loved by everyone,” said Antoinette.

André’s diverse interests included his love for vintage cars and crafting unique model cars. “He was a proud collector and maintainer of these vehicles, reflecting his meticulous nature and passion for craftsmanship.”

André found joy in teaching others how to shoot on the range, sharing his skills and knowledge generously.

His love extended beyond humans as he was a devoted pet lover, sharing a special bond with his boerboels, Oblix, Ore and Spartacus.

Described as a helpful person, Antoinette notes, “We lost our lifeline in life. He was our boeta and we used to call him for everything. He was there always. He was our person.”

A final farewell

On January 10, EMPD organised a memorial service in front of André’s house to honour his memory.

The following day, a semi-military funeral took place at the NG Church in Elsburg, paying tribute to André’s commitment to service.

Antoinette, on behalf of the family, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support received from friends, colleagues, Stepping Stone Hospice, CPS Security and EMPD. André will be missed.
