Hoërskool Marais Viljoen High School is celebrating an achievement after four of its athletes were selected to represent South Africa at the COSSASA (Confederation of Schools Sport Associations of Southern Africa) Games in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, from August 31 to September 3.

The selection marks the largest number of athletes from the school ever chosen to compete internationally at the COSSASA Games.

The achievement follows an exceptional athletics season for the school. A record 10 Marais Viljoen athletes qualified to compete at the South African Championships in May, where they delivered outstanding performances and collectively won 16 medals, another new record for the school.

To qualify for the COSSASA Games, athletes had to win their respective events at the South African Championships.

The Marais Viljoen athletes rose to the challenge and earned their places among the best young athletes in the country.

The four athletes selected are Lize-Mari van den Berg, Janine Berry, Tyran Brooks and Calvin Kandira.

Van den Berg will compete in the U17 400m and 800m events, despite being only U14.

Berry will represent South Africa in the U17 long jump, while Brooks will compete in the U17 1 500m and 3 000m events. Kandira will compete in the U17 400m.

The school wishes its athletes all the best as they prepare to fly the South African flag on the international stage in Zimbabwe.
