VIDEO: Ekurhuleni cautions against spreading unconfirmed messages

Amid the circulation of unconfirmed messages on social media platforms, the CoE has weighed in, advising the public to confirm information on its platforms.

The CoE has cautioned against spreading unconfirmed correspondence on social media platforms, which often misleads residents.

According to Ekurhuleni spokesperson Zweli Dlamini, such messages expose people to fraud and corruption.

“Because then they are made to pay monies for certain services they are not meant to pay for.”

He said they find people being promised jobs in return for money but later learn it is a scam.

“We have forever been telling people that unless the document is an official municipal document and that information is available on our website, don’t believe anything you see. And the information you receive should be issued by someone with authority. We have our own social media platforms and use X [Twitter] and Facebook.

We also send the public SMSes from the customer relations management department,” Dlamini said.

“Councillors would be good communicators for the municipality because they get exposed to information. If you need clarity on something, there’s nothing wrong with going to a councillor. In fact, we encourage that. That is why councillors now and again call for public meetings,” he explained.

Ward 106 Clr Tim Denny weighed in, cautioning the community when receiving information from someone who is not an official.

“In the past, we had instances when voice notes about the electricity being off were shared, and people acted on that. Some businesses closed down, acting on this false information. Councillors get information directly from engineers, and then our responsibility is to share up-to-date information,” he said.

Residents are encouraged to report service delivery interruptions and issues through these platforms:
