EMPD urges informal traders to abide by the law

Informal traders are required by law to obtain trading permits to guarantee safety of their consumables.

A person who wishes to sell as an informal trader must apply to the Ekurhuleni municipality and must be considered against the criteria set out in the policy.

This is according to the EMPD.

The EMPD’s functions include traffic policing, policing of municipal by-laws and crime prevention.

EMPD spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa said people have come out to say that metro police treat street vendors unfairly, as they are just trying to make a living.

“We as the EMPD say there are procedures for informal trading for those who want to conduct business within the City of Ekurhuleni. The metro police and the municipality acknowledge the right for street vendors to trade in compliance with the legislation within the framework,” she said.

Thepa said a permit must be kept at the place of trade and produced on demand by an authorised official.
