Furry friends bring glimmer of hope

Stepping Stone Palliative Care Services cherishes the heart-warming impact of Paws 4 U’s therapy dogs on their patients, allowing them to draw on a sense of calm, love, and peace even in the face of life-limiting illnesses.

At Stepping Stone Hospice, the essence of compassion and companionship resonates deeply, particularly during the most challenging times in life.

In a heartfelt tribute, Stepping Stone Palliative Care Services expressed its profound appreciation for the remarkable contributions of the Paws 4 U organisation, whose therapy dogs have brought a unique warmth and joy to their in-patient unit in New Market.

In an era when kindness and emotional support are paramount, the dedicated team at Paws 4 U has consistently bridged the gap between human companionship and animal affection.

For at least six years now, their therapy dogs have become invaluable companions for their patients facing life-limiting illnesses. These furry friends have not just provided comfort but also a sense of peace and connection when it is most needed.

According to Rose Stafford of Paws 4 U, their mission is to bring together dogs and people in a warm, non-threatening manner, allowing them to interact positively through the use of our controlled and friendly approach.

“Being confined to a hospital bed, dealing with issues in a specialist facility, or moving into a retirement or assisted living facility where your surroundings are not familiar or the situations are stressful is a difficult place to find yourself. Our Paws 4 U therapy dogs and handlers step up here to make a difference,” she said.

She added that part of the therapy dog interaction includes teaching people about pet education, bite avoidance, and caring for others.

The unconditional love

The presence of these gentle, furry friends at Stepping Stone has been transformative.

Their wagging tails and warm snuggles offer a reminder that love transcends even the most difficult of circumstances.

Ruby Evrard, a psychosocial counsellor at the entity, said: “For patients grappling with life-limiting and life-threatening illnesses, these therapy dogs bring not only joy but also a glimmer of hope, showcasing that meaningful moments can still abound amid hardship.”

Tersia Burger, Stepping Stone Hospice’s CEO and founder, extended her appreciation to the Paws 4 U team.

“We want to take a moment to express our heartfelt appreciation for the amazing team at Paws 4 U. Their unwavering dedication to bringing therapy dogs into our unit has made a profound impact on the lives of our patients and their families. Thank you for your continuous support and for helping us create moments of joy during this difficult journey,” she said.

As the collaboration between Stepping Stone Hospice and Paws 4 U continues, it highlights an essential aspect of holistic care – recognising the profound healing power of love and companionship.

Both organisations are committed to ensuring that every patient experiences moments of happiness, reminding us all of the strength found in community and compassion.
