Mariaan van Niekerk fights through daily struggles on long road to recovery

After a life-threatening boating accident, Mariaan van Niekerk is now recovering at home but faces both progress and setbacks each day.

Every day brings a new challenge for Mariaan van Niekerk as she continues her long road to recovery, a journey filled with progress and setbacks.

Since her discharge from the hospital, after a boating accident on December 1, the family has been navigating the ups and downs of her healing process. Some days are better than others, but every day brings a glimmer of hope.

Mariaan’s injuries were life-threatening, with severe damage to her leg, multiple broken bones, and extensive muscle damage.

After 15 surgeries, each procedure playing a crucial role, she is finally home, but her recovery remains far from over.

Doctors are optimistic following her most recent surgery, but the next four to five months are critical as Mariaan faces ongoing rehabilitation and care.

“It feels like a new chapter. The recovery is far from over, but having her home brings a sense of peace. Some days are good, and some are hard, but we are taking it day by day,” said Marcel Conradie, Mariaan’s partner.

While Mariaan is relieved to be home, her journey continues to be challenging. Her recovery involves regular laser treatments for her scars, visits from a wound care nurse, and sessions with an occupational therapist and physiotherapist.

The emotional toll has also been significant, but Mariaan’s determination to heal remains unwavering.

“We still have a long way to go. There are good days but also hard ones. It is an emotional and physical rollercoaster,” Marcel shared.

The family remains deeply grateful for the unwavering support from the community. Marcel thanked everyone who has rallied behind them, from family members to friends and strangers, whose kindness has been a beacon of light during these challenging times.

“We experienced backlogs financially and would be grateful if the community can continue supporting us for the next four to five months until her full recovery,” Marcel said.

If you wish to help, make donations through the family’s BackaBuddy page or by contacting Marcel on 073 178 7704.

The Conradie family remains hopeful, knowing that with continued support, Mariaan will overcome the challenges ahead, one day at a time.
