Veteran South African actor’s funeral to be held at Germiston City Hall

Don Mlangeni Nawa died on April 16 and will be laid to rest on April 26.

The news of legendary actor Don Mlangeni Nawa’s death shocked many South Africans.

Nawa died on April 16 at 66. Tributes have poured in since.

“He was the heart of our family, a loving father, brother, and friend. To the world, he was a gifted and respected actor whose presence lit up every stage and screen he graced.

“His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the stories he told and the love he gave so freely. We are deeply moved by the outpouring of love and support,” said the Nawa family in a statement.

The cause of Nawa’s death is unknown.

Nawa starred in many hit SA TV series, such as ‘Sgudi ’Snaysi (playing Laqhasha), Ubambo Lwami (playing David), and Hlala Kwabafileyo (playing Zakhe) between the late 1980s and early 1990s.

In the mid-1990s, Nawa starred as Zebedee Matabane in the soap opera Isidingo. He also acted in many SA movies and performed plays at theatres.

In 2023, Nawa played King Langa in Multichoice’s hit, Shaka Ilembe.

Tributes for the veteran actor

Many South Africans, including politicians, business leaders, actors and prominent people in the arts industry, took to social media to pay tribute to Nawa.

Former government minister Fikile Mbalula was among them. He visited Nawa’s Meyersdal home in Alberton to convey his condolences to the Nawa family.

Memorial service details:

Date: April 24;

Venue: Soweto Theatre;

Time: 14:30 for 15:00.
