Hospice staff hailed as heroes after man hit by truck in New Market
Quick action and compassion from the Stepping Stone Hospice team bring relief to injured Sipho Myeni after a traumatic accident outside the facility.
A distressing incident unfolded outside the Stepping Stone Hospice in New Market when a heavily loaded truck struck Sipho Myeni shortly after he had completed his night shift on May 14.
The accident left Myeni in shock and with a serious and painful injury to his right foot.
Witnesses described the impact as deeply distressing.
The Stepping Stone team immediately responded.
The founder and CEO of the organisation, Tersia Burger, said that her staff rushed to Myeni’s side, providing initial help and offering the Hospice’s wheelchair to help ease his suffering.
“Our staff, being the compassionate and caring individuals they are, sprang into action without hesitation. They rushed to Sipho’s aid, lending him our wheelchair and attending to his needs with empathy and care,” Burger said.

The Hospice nurses promptly called the emergency services and administered pain relief to help stabilise Myeni until professional medical help arrived.
Once the EMPD emergency and ambulance services personnel had reached the scene, they took over Myeni’s care and transported him to a nearby facility for further treatment.
The Hospice has since publicly acknowledged their team’s actions, praising them for their swift and selfless response.
Special recognition went to nurse Lorraine Tshabalala for staying by Myeni’s side and holding his hand until the ambulance arrived.
“We thank our staff for their kind assistance and selfless actions. Their empathy and willingness to help those in need truly reflect the values we hold dear at the Stepping Stone Hospice,” Tersia said.
