Man dies in shack fire in Palm Ridge

A late-night shack fire in Palm Ridge left a man dead, prompting renewed warnings about fire safety as winter sets in.

A shack fire in Palm Ridge claimed the life of a 55-year-old man after engulfing the shack in flames late on May 26.

The EMS said the city’s call centre received a distress call at about 23:39.

Firefighters from stations three and four immediately went to the scene on 1 6050 Manyovu Avenue, Ext 9.
On arrival, EMS officials found the structure destroyed by flames.

Firefighting operations were launched without delay, which brought the blaze under control.

A search of the premises led to the discovery of a burnt body inside the shack.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by fire safety officials and the SAPS.

The EMS urged residents to take extra care when using heating appliances during winter because the risk of fires significantly increases during this period.
