Runner to empower young adults with intellectual disabilities

Dr Meyer will run the Comrades Marathon to support the Place of Purpose NPO.

The Place of Purpose NPO supports young adults with intellectual disabilities aged between 18 and 35.

Founded with the belief that every individual deserves to live a life filled with dignity, purpose and opportunity, Place of Purpose offers a structured daily programme that builds essential life and workplace skills in a safe, encouraging environment.

And on June 8, Dr Meyer will lace up his running shoes to raise funds for the NO with every gruelling step forward during his Comrades run.

Building life skills for independence

At the core of the NPO’s programme is a daily living skills component, where students learn practical life skills that foster independence. This includes essential tasks such as cooking, cleaning, laundry and personal hygiene. Many take these skills for granted, but they are crucial for independent living.

Each activity is broken down into manageable steps and reinforced with consistent guidance and support to help each student succeed.

Developing communication skills

Understanding that communication is essential in all aspects of life, the communications programme supports students in learning to express themselves effectively and interact with others.

This includes personal communication skills and those needed in a professional or workplace environment. From understanding body language and tone to learning how to engage in conversation, the goal is to help students feel confident and understood.

Preparing for the workplace

The workplace readiness programme strongly focuses on health and safety and job-sharing skills. The students learn the expectations and routines of various work environments. They engage in hands-on learning experiences like packing shelves, clearing tables in a restaurant setting, setting tables with tablecloths and utensils and organising supplies.

These opportunities build job-related skills and give students a sense of purpose and achievement. By participating in real-world tasks, they start seeing themselves as capable contributors to society.

Hands-on learning through student workshop

Classroom and on-site training: The students also participate in a small workshop about practical entrepreneurship. They buy and resell biscuits and scones and make handcrafted soaps. These homemade products are a source of pride and vital to the students’ economic empowerment.

The proceeds from these sales provide each student with a small stipend, giving them a sense of ownership, reward and responsibility. This initiative teaches the value of work, saving and contributing, reinforcing life and job skills.

Individualised support for lasting impact

Every young adult at Place of Purpose receives individualised attention. It recognises that each student has unique needs, abilities and potential. The staff work closely with the students to create a supportive, structured environment where they are consistently engaged and motivated.

The ultimate goal is to empower these young adults to gain independence, build confidence and thrive in their communities. With the correct guidance, encouragement, and practical training, they are better equipped to live more fulfilled and self-sufficient lives.

“We are proud to announce that Place of Purpose is hosting a GivenGain fundraiser with our ambassador, Dr Johan Meyer, who will run the Comrades Marathon on June 8 to support our organisation,” said Gwen McKechnie.

This inspiring initiative will help raise vital funds to continue the NPO’s life-changing work with their students. Every donation, big or small, goes directly toward building skills, independence and brighter futures.

Place of Purpose is more than a programme. It is a community built on love, respect and a belief in the potential of every individual. They invite you to learn more about their work, support their mission and join them in creating a future filled with hope and purpose for young adults with intellectual disabilities.
