UPDATE: City acts after illegal power connection sparks outrage in Mayberry Park

Residents on Groendoring Street in Mayberry Park, Alberton, had voiced their anger and frustration over illegal electricity connections and metre box tampering.

The City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) has responded to frustrations from residents of Groendoring Street, Mayberry Park, over illegal electricity connections and meter box tampering.

Responding to the frustrations, Ekurhuleni spokesperson Zweli Dlamini, said: “The Groendoring Street meter went into tamper mode and that has been rectified. The illegal connection was found, and the city disconnected the customer, and a fine was issued.

“The burnt breaker was replaced, and there were no other issues found on the distribution box. To fight illegal connections, the city will be replacing the fibre box with a steel protective distribution box.”

Residents of Mayberry Park are calling on Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza to visit the area amid growing service delivery concerns.

“We have a list of issues for the mayor’s attention,” said a resident.

Ward 94 Clr Samantha Nair promised to meet with residents of Mayberry Park and engage them on these issues.
