WATCH: High mast light hangs precariously near busy Alberton Road, raising fears

A damaged high mast street light in Alberton is clinging to a single steel bolt and a nearby tree putting motorists, pedestrians, and informal traders at serious risk.

A high mast street light on the corner of Heidelberg Road and Dakenah Street in Alberton has become a major safety concern for residents and road users.

It is leaning dangerously, being held up by just one steel bolt and a tree beside it. It poses a risk to motorists travelling along the busy Heidelberg Road and has reportedly been in a precarious state for some time.

The risk is even higher with the recent strong winds and rains, which appear to be worsening the tilt.

Fears are also that it could fall on passers-by. If that one bolt gives way, anyone on the pavement or even vehicles driving past could be seriously hurt.

The risk extends beyond motorists and pedestrians. Some informal traders operate just metres from the mast, and they are also at risk but have little option but to continue working there.

The risk is particularly high during peak traffic hours and windy conditions. The Alberton Record has since sought comment from the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) and will provide an update once received.
