Community spirit shines at children’s holiday camp at Eikenhof Informal Settlement
Excitement, creativity, and community spirit came together at a joyful children’s holiday camp this December.
A festive holiday camp brought excitement, learning, and generosity together this December, as children gathered for five days of creativity, fun, and empowerment at Eikenhof Informal Settlement.
The camp opened on December 1 with a warm welcome that set the tone for the week.
Children waited eagerly at the main road to greet the team, their excitement reflecting the strong bonds already formed within the community.
Adding to the joy, Nonhlanhla from Pikit Up joined the camp on the first day, accompanied by her two daughters.
Their visit proved a highlight, with the children thoroughly enjoying the time spent together.
Creativity played a central role throughout the camp.
The children made all their own decorations, cutting out paper and painting colourful houses, decorating cones, creating a large collaborative artwork and stringing popcorn to brighten the space.
These hands-on activities encouraged teamwork, imagination and a strong sense of achievement.
Later on, the programme took on an educational focus when Sergeant Catherine from Mondoer SAPS visited the camp.
She spoke to the children about public responsibility and shared basic self-defence skills, delivering an engaging and practical session that combined safety awareness with confidence-building.
Celebrations continued on December 12 with a special party for the children.
El Shaddai HCC marked the occasion by providing gifts and a delicious lunch, ensuring a memorable end to the festivities.
The camp was made possible through generous community support.
Shantara donated jerseys for the children, while AT Nurseries provided plants as gifts for both speakers and children. Linen Language donated blankets to thank the volunteers for their dedication.
Refreshments were supplied through the generosity of Eye of Africa, who donated softdrinks, and Bene, who provided bottled water.
Organisers expressed heartfelt thanks to all partners and volunteers involved, noting that the camp was not only a time of fun, but also an example of what can be achieved when organisations and individuals come together in support of children and community wellbeing.
