Residents of Silwerkroon Old Age Home were treated to a morning filled with music, laughter and treasured memories when Solidariteit Helpende Hand presented a nostalgic Afrikaans production on August 13.

The production, presented by Sandra Taljaard and her team, was designed to uplift residents and create an opportunity for them to reconnect with memories from their younger years.

Taljaard said the programme also focuses on well being by encouraging residents to move, laugh, breathe and take part in light exercise, while presenting everything in an entertaining show format.

“The aim is to uplift them and create something positive that they can remember, while also helping to revive their minds. We go back to when they were young, take them out and have a lot of fun together,” said Sandra.

The performance featured familiar Afrikaans songs and lively dance, taking residents on a journey back to their younger years.

Solidariteit Helpende Hand works in communities to provide support to people who are struggling, including people with disabilities who are financially disadvantaged.

According to Taljaard, the Silwerkroon visit was the 10th old-age home where the team has presented the production.

She said the team hopes to continue taking the programme to other old-age homes whenever they have the opportunity.

“If anybody wants us there and we’ve got the time, we will go there,” she said.

The morning at Silwerkroon provided residents with an opportunity to enjoy familiar music, participate in the entertainment and share memories, while promoting social interaction and well-being through a fun and nostalgic experience.
