Community walk to honour Juanita and stand against GBV
A community shaken by tragedy will come together in purple to honour Juanita’s memory, show solidarity with those affected, and take a united stand against gender-based violence during a family-friendly walk in Brackenhurst.
The community has been left reeling after a tragic incident on January 9. This event has shaken residents deeply and affected many who knew Juanita Vermeulen personally, as well as those who never had the privilege of meeting her.
The sense of loss has been widespread, underscoring the impact this tragedy has had across the area.
In response, community members have come together to organise a walk in honour of Juanita, aimed at showing solidarity with all those affected and taking a collective stand against gender-based violence (GBV).
Organisers say the initiative is about remembrance, support and unity at a time when many are still struggling to come to terms with what has happened.
The walk is intended to be a visible demonstration of compassion and togetherness, encouraging residents to support one another and to stand firm against violence in all its forms.
It is also hoped that the gathering will offer comfort to grieving families, friends and community members.
The walk will take place on January 16, starting at 18:00 from the corner of McBride and Prins Albert streets in Brackenhurst.
The event is family-friendly, and participants are encouraged to wear purple in support of GBV prevention.
Community members believe that by walking together, they can honour Juanita’s memory, support those who are hurting, and send a clear message that GBV has no place in their community.
