Brackenhurst Primary’s bottle-top drive brings new wheelchair to Hospice

A school recycling drive turned kindness into comfort for the Stepping Stone Hospice patients.

The Stepping Stone Hospice thanked the Brackenhurst Primary School, Melody Toy, Kevin Mostert and the team at Interwaste for an act of kindness that will make a real difference to patients.

The Hospice was recently moved by a message from the school that read: “Our school has collected enough bottle tops to get a wheelchair.”

What began as a simple recycling initiative quickly grew into a show of compassion, teamwork and social responsibility.

Every learner who brought bottle tops to school played a vital role in turning everyday waste into life-changing support.

Their collective effort resulted in a new wheelchair for the Hospice, providing essential mobility and comfort to patients who need it.

“To every child at Brackenhurst Primary who brought bottle tops to school, you are heroes. You have shown that no act of kindness is too small and that even the simplest contributions can have a profound impact,” Tersia Burger, the founder and CEO of the Hospice, said.

The Hospice also thanked Melody and Kevin for their leadership and encouragement, as well as Interwaste for supporting the initiative and helping transform recycled materials into tangible care equipment.

“On behalf of every patient who will benefit from this wheelchair, every family member who will witness their loved one’s comfort, and every staff member who will provide care with this essential equipment, we thank you from the depths of our hearts,” Tersia added.

The initiative is a shining example of how schools, businesses and community organisations can work together to create meaningful change, proving that compassion, when shared, can move lives forward.
