WATCH: Occupants of Alberton North’s funny farm led a neighbourhood clean-up campaign

In an effort to foster positive change in the neighbourhood they cut grass at a local park, removed weeds from sidewalks, and swept in and around the Alberton SAPS station.

Occupants of Alberton’s so-called funny farm, an informal settlement in Alberton North, led a neighbourhood clean-up campaign on February 18.

They cut grass at a local park, removed weeds from sidewalks, and swept the premises of Alberton SAPS.

One of the team leaders of the clean-up, Honourable Jah Lucky, commented on the campaign. He said: “We are here taking care of our community by cleaning the park, removing weeds from sidewalks, and we have come to sweep and clean in and around Alberton SAPS station.

“Together we talk, together we walk, and together we wash one another’s feet. We are just here to do our Father’s command (God),” he said.

Lucky said they planned to do more of these neighbourhood clean-ups and hoped to get community support.

“We have tools to cut grass, remove weeds, and sweep our streets, but these are things we use in our homes. We would like to get professional equipment to work more effectively.

“We lack basics, such as refuse bags to put the rubbish in after we remove it. It would be nice to get community buy-in,” added Lucky.

Many streets and parks in Alberton remain unmaintained, with weeds and visibly overgrown grass in the suburbs.
Lucky told the Alberton Record that they were trying to change that.

“We are happy to continue doing this work, both as a public service to our community and to keep busy. We also want to make this a piece-job opportunity so that we can sustain ourselves,” said Lucky.
