City on high alert as severe thunderstorms hit Ekurhuleni
While no life-threatening incidents have been reported, rescue and aquatic teams are closely monitoring conditions, urging motorists, pedestrians and residents near flood-prone areas to exercise caution and report emergencies immediately.
The City of Ekurhuleni’s DEMS on high alert following heavy downpours that affected parts of the city earlier this morning and over the weekend.
According to the city, no life-threatening emergencies have been reported or attended to thus far.
However, rescue and aquatic teams remain on standby should conditions worsen.
DEMS spokesperson William Ntladi said emergency services are fully geared up and monitoring the situation closely as severe thunderstorms continue to impact certain areas.
Residents, pedestrians and motorists are urged to remain vigilant during this period of unstable weather.
Motorists are advised to keep a safe following distance and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before travelling.
Pedestrians are cautioned against crossing flooded streams and are encouraged to use alternative routes where bridges are submerged.
Residents living along flood lines are also advised to remain alert for possible flooding as water levels may rise rapidly during heavy rainfall.
The city has appealed to members of the public to report any life-threatening emergencies to the CoE Life-threatening Call Centre on 011 458 0911.
Emergency teams will continue to monitor conditions and respond where necessary.
